Dr. Leachman is a physician–scientist and innovation leader at the intersection of dermatology, artificial intelligence, and digital health technologies. As Chief Medical Officer of SkinBit, she oversees the clinical and scientific strategy behind the company’s next-generation platform for full-body skin imaging, risk assessment, and early cancer detection. Her work spans clinical workflow design, regulatory strategy, validation studies, physician integration, and the development of high-quality dermoscopic datasets that power SkinBit’s AI models. She plays a central role in shaping SkinBit’s mission to decentralize skin cancer screening, enabling high-quality, accessible, non-invasive skin assessments across diverse points of care. Dr. Leachman pioneered digital health in dermatology as principal investigator of MoleMapper, one of the first Apple ResearchKit applications, which created the world’s largest publicly available dataset of consumer-collected smartphone skin images. Her “War on Melanoma” public health initiative demonstrated how population-scale education and technology can transform cancer detection outcomes. Her research expertise spans melanoma prevention and early detection, genetic cancer syndromes, novel imaging technologies, and digital pathology. She has led major programs at Huntsman Cancer Institute and OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, and served as Chair of Dermatology at OHSU before joining the University of Utah as Vice-Chair of Faculty Engagement. Dr. Leachman is a Doris Duke Clinical Scientist Award recipient and has been funded by the NIH and Department of Defense as principal investigator.
